Namecoin Domains
ℕamecoin is a blockchain-based domain name system, Web3 identity backend and cryptocurrency backed by the Bitcoin network. The blockchain is the very first code fork of Bitcoin, its genesis block was mined on April 17, 2011. A Namecoin asset is the cryptographic asset consisting of a key/value pair. The key is the name of the asset and is formed,
in accordance with the specifications, from a namespace prefix (alphanumeric characters followed by a slash) and the second level domain (also called the root label). For example, the asset
d/exchange is resolved as
exchange.bit with the historical suffix
.bit as the top level domain (TLD). The asset is thus represented by both the name (key) of the asset and the domain name (including label and TLD). The asset's value field contains data such as the server IP and/or contact information.
This cryptographic asset can be considered a utility token, as it can be practically used as an Internet domain and/or a digital business card using the connected
Asset Viewer according to the
General Specifications. Once created, the asset can be renewed, allowed to expire and re-registered - but it can only be issued once on the Namecoin blockchain. As the utility token is thus unique, the cryptographic asset itself is a Non Fungible Token (NFT). In addition, the data value of the asset can contain a link to external assets such as images or any other type of file, as well as on-chain payload data such as Base64 encoded image data, SVG vector graphics and others.
Beside
this use as a classic NFT, the asset can be used as a Proof of Existence for any type of electronic file. Instead of the label of a domain name, the asset's name is made up of the dedicated namespace prefix
nft/, which has no TLD associated, followed by the filename. The asset's data value can provide file properties such as MD5 hash, author, download location etc. up to a size of 520 bytes, see
